Happy Friday to all! In honor of Friday, that oft beloved day of the week, here are a few fabulous things that I am really into right now:
1. The John Legend Lexus Commercial
Oh. My. I just love him. He just has something that transcends and gender and really gets to me. Saw this commercial for the first time last night, and my heart skipped a beat. I hope it goes into heavy rotation during all my favorite shows!
2. Rant: An Oral Biography of Buster Casey by Chuck Palahniuk
I am loving this book. I am big fan of Chuck Palahniuk in general, though some of his more recent books have less than thrilled me. BUT this new release… It feels like the old Chuck is back! I know Palahniuk isn’t exactly a likely choice to be featured on a blog with “feminist” in the title, but we all have our male and female energies and my male energy just loves the voice of Chuck’s work. I love his dark humor, his wit and sarcasm and the distinctly male energy of his books. And I love how he sucks me into stories about topics that I would otherwise have no interest in. For example, Rant tells the story of a guy who spreads rabies to an insane number of people. Doesn’t sound like my thing – but I am eating this book up with a spoon.
3. Ugly Betty
Last night’s episode was fantastic!!! And the teaser for next week’s season finale has me super excited!!! There are so many, many reasons to love Ugly Betty. And super sexy/sassy/bitchy Amanda (pictured left of Betty) is one of them. She is rapidly becoming one of my favorite parts of the show – even though the bitchy skinny blonde is so not generally my type – Amanda is a delicious character.
It’s official, John Legend is my new boy-crush.
First of all, look at that picture… Secondly, listen to any/all of the following songs “Show Me,” “P.D.A.,” “Where Did My Baby Go,” “Slow Dance,” (all off of his second album, Once and Again), or “Let’s Get Lifted,” “Alright,” “Ordinary People” (all off of his first album, Get Lifted), and let the drooling commence.
I saw him last night at the Orpheum, and he was fantastic! I guess I had kind of underestimated his status as a sex symbol – there were lots and lots of ladies there last night hootin’ and hollerin’ as if on cue after every sexy lyric, and shrieking with delight periodically. And man, did he put on a show!
He had three back-up singers and three horn players who all had simple old-school style choreography, which I loved, and he spent equal time strutting the stage, dancing a little and sitting at the piano playing and singing. He knows how to work a crowd, and he knows just what to say – he’s just so charming!
And that voice!! He just slides from the top to the bottom of the scale and back again, and makes it seem so damn effortless!
I’ve already searched Youtube, with no avail, for a video of the lucky lady who he called up onstage to dance with him during “Slow Dance” – somebody had to have caught that on their fancy cell phone or something!!
One of the many highlights of the set was when Corinne Bailey Rae, who was the support act, came out for a duet. They sounded lovely together, and as John said, it was a “real treat” for the audience.
I am a big fan of her self-titled, debut album – it’s so simple and soulful and musical and beautiful, and there is not a bad song on it. I didn’t have super high expectations for seeing her live – I just figured she’d sing the album and it would be lovely and nice, and that would be all. But she exceeded my expectations and then some!
In many cases the live versions were fuller and bigger, and it was such a great surprise! She also did a couple new songs, which I and the rest of the audience ate right up! To me, it really speaks volumes about an artist when the crowd’s response to never-heard tunes is just as enthusiastic as the response to the hits.
Plus, her voice sounded great, and she came across as very sweet and likable onstage.
What a great show!!
