The big move to our shiny new two-bedroom is just around the corner! June 1 is the big day, a mere 25 days away, but we have a vacation in the middle (San Francisco!), so it’s really more like 19 days. And… I have not packed one. single. item. [insert nervous laughter here]
But it’s okay, because I have a plan. I like to break things down into weekends. I never get anything done during the week (thank you, Boston commute!), so I like to delegate big tasks to weekends. We did this with the wedding and it worked wonders.
This weekend, however, is Mothers’ Day, meaning Sunday will be spent being a good daughter, leaving little-to-no time for any moving related tasks. So I’ve just got Saturday (on Fridays we like to go out to dinner and then slip into a coma on the couch). This Saturday’s tasks:
- Living Room Closet Purge
- Pack Books
- Full Clothing Purge
- Destroy Laundry Backlog
Bonus Task: Attack “Office”
The Living Room Closet Purge is truly essential to the pre-packing preparation as this is where we keep our books. Lots and lots of books. Some of them are just going to have to go! Only the most beloved and needed will stay. I’m putting my game face on! And hopefully, we can make a few dollars selling them to a used bookstore. Any leftovers go to the local library. Once the closet has been fully purged, all the keepers get packed.
The Clothing Purge is ongoing. At this point, we can pack away the heaviest sweaters (gotta keep some warmer items handy for the unpredictable New England spring!), tackle the storage bins that we keep under the bed, and weed out the closets. We have already donated 6 trash bags of clothing to charity, and that is just the beginning. We suffer from the common syndrome of My-Drawers-Are-Full……Of-Crap-I-Don’t-Wear-itis, and it is time for us to recover!!
Destroy Laundry Backlog!!! Our laundry situation is kind of a bummer. We are on the fourth floor of a building with more than 10 apartments, and there is one washer and one drier in the basement. This makes doing laundry a chore and means that we often get behind… As we are right now. So this Saturday, we are fully committed to a laundromat trip that will destroy the backlog. And since we will have completed the Clothing Purge, there will be plenty of space to put away all of the good clothes, and anything else will be added to the donation pile.
These four tasks should make for a pretty busy Saturday. If by some miracle of the universe we finish all of these tasks and find ourselves thinking “What next?,” I have chosen a Bonus Task of Attacking the “Office.” I say “office” because it is actually a corner of the living room. We’ve been working on this area fairly regularly over the past couple of weeks, but it would be great to just finish.
Next weekend is our vacation, and the following will be for final organization and beginning the real packing. The weekend after that is a Saturday of pack, pack, packing, and then Sunday is moving day! So much to do, so little time!!
